Counselling & Psychotherapy in Rathfarnham & Ballinteer
Specialist in Walk & Talk Therapy, Bereavement, CBT and Integrative Counselling.

Are you overwhelmed or just struggling.     Do you need someone to talk to.

Most people wait a lot longer than they should before reaching out for support.

The signs were there, but life kept moving and it felt easier to push through.  You don't have to be in crisis        to reach out.  If any of these signs below feel familiar, I am here whenever you are ready.

The same thoughts on a loop.

When the same worry, regret, or fear keeps circling back  no matter what you do, that is not just a bad week, it is        your mind asking for a different kind of support..  A trained Counsellor can help you break the cycle.

      Your coping stops working

Most people have a go-to way of managing stress, exercise, talking to friends or keeping busy.

When these stop working and everything still feels heavy, ita a sign that something deeper needs attention, not          just more willpower.

      It's affecting your relationship

Snapping at people you care about, pulling away, or feeling disconnected in conversations you used to

enjoy.#These are often the first places emotional strain shows up.

Reaching out early makes the work easier.

You don't have to have everything figured out before your first session.

Therapies Offered

Walk & Talk Therapy Dublin 16

Most therapy happens in a room with four walls.  Joe takes his clients into the parks instead.

As the founder of RathfarnhamCounselling, Joe has spent years watching what happens when people step outside and start walking.  Something shifts.  The guard comes down, breathing slows, and conversations go places they never would when sitting across from each other in a quiet room.  Thats why Walk & Talk Therapy is at the heart of what Joe does here in Rathfarnham & Ballinteer.  Movement and nature have a way of opening things up, whether you are working through grief, anxiety, stress, or just feeling stuck.

Joe has built this practice because he believes everyone deserves a space where they feel safe enough to talk honestly.  Sometimes that space has trees and grass instead of walls.

If you have ever thought about trying therapy but the idea of sitting in a room felt like too much, then maybe a walk is a better starting point.

Joe would love to hear from you.

Counselling & Psychotherapy - Frequently asked questions

       What is Talk Therapy Counselling

  • Talk therapy is a two way conversation. You and I will meet at agreed times in a private, confidential setting and discuss things like:

  • Stress, anxiety, or low mood, Relationship issues, Life transitions (Loss, Career changes, etc)

  • Patterns of thinking or behavior you want to change

  • I don't just listen—I will try help you make sense of what’s going on, spot patterns, and develop healthier ways of coping.

                 How does it work

  • There are many different approaches, but with me, together we will

  • 1. Exploring your thoughts and feelings You talk openly while I ask questions that help you reflect more deeply.

  • 2. Identifying patterns. You might notice recurring beliefs (e.g., “I’m not good enough”) or habits that affect your life.

  • 3. Learning skills.

  • 4. Making changes.   Over time, you apply what you learn to real-life situations.

      Common types of talk therapy

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): Focuses on changing negative thought patterns and behaviors.

  • Psychodynamic therapy: Looks at how past experiences influence current feelings and relationships.

  • Humanistic therapy: Emphasizes personal growth and self-understanding.

  • Integrative therapy: Combines elements from different approaches.

       My role as your therapist

  • Provide a safe, non-judgmental space

  • Listen actively and asks thoughtful questions

  • Help you see things from new perspectives

  • Support you in setting goals and making changes

I  don’t tell you what to do—but I will try guide you toward your own insights.

                 How long it takes

  • Short-term: A few weeks or months (e.g., for a specific issue)

  • Long-term: Ongoing, for deeper exploration.

  • It depends on your goals and situation.

       What it’s not

  • It’s not just “venting”—it’s structured and goal-oriented

  • It’s not advice-giving like a friend might do

  • It’s not instant—it takes time and effot.

        Why people find it helpful

  • Better understanding of themselves

  • Improved coping skills

  • Healthier relationships

  • Reduced anxiety, stress, or depression symptoms

Losing someone important to us can be emotionally devastating - whether that be a partner, family member, friend or pet.

Anger Management

Without managing your anger, your outbursts of hostility may eventually have catastrophic consequences.

Self Harm

Relationship & Family issues

Deliberately hurting your own body, such as cutting or burning, is a harmful way to cope with emotional pain or intense anger

Low Self Esteem

Challenges may include infidelity, loss of intimacy, communication difficulties, coping with stress challenges, financial pressures, boundary violations, difficulty balancing individual and couple expectations, divorce, separation and breaking up.

Stress/Trauma

Lacking confidence about who you are and what you can do. You often feel incompetent, unloved, or inadequate.

Stress is how we react when we feel under pressure or threatened. It usually happens when we are in a situation that we don't feel we can manage or control.

Depression

It can affect all aspects of life, including relationships with family, friends and community. It can result from or lead to problems at school and at work.

Work related issues

Job dissatisfaction, workplace injury, stress, discrimination and bullying, violence, accidental death, retirement, retrenchment and unemployment.

Addiction

Addiction is defined as a chronic, relapsing disorder characterised by compulsive drug seeking and use despite adverse consequences.

Counselling Methods

I have trained in a number of Counselling styles and combine these where appropriate, for each client in an integrative format designed to obtain the best results for you.

You are the expert on you and therefore progress will be dictated by you.

Whatever approach or combination of approaches is best, you will receive a warm and professional service.

You will be fully supported and never judged.

You will not feel rushed or pushed out of your depth.

The use of effective psychotherapy methods to instill self-understanding and encouragment for you and adapting new attitudes and feelings towards life situations can help you.

Bear in mind that therapy is not a magic pill or a quick fix.  Sometimes progress can be painful.

Therapy is a healing process that necessitates participation and investment from both you and me alike.

Making small changes to self-defeating behavior and coping with feelings of sadness, fear, and pain can bring life-altering results.
